Student Placements
Thank you for your interest in completing a placement with the Ontario Association of Distress Centres, operating as Distress and Crisis Ontario (DCO). This webpage outlines who we are, explores the potential roles and responsibilities of student placements at our organization, highlights real-life experiences from some of our past student placements, shares some examples of student-led work, and outlines the expectations for any placements taken on with us.
Areas of Interest
At DCO, we aim to offer a placement that is flexible to your needs while helping you meet your learning goals and build new skills. The following list details the areas of work we offer to student interns. You could choose to focus on one area or contribute a little something to each.
Administration
- Aid in monitoring email inboxes
- Assist in policy making/editing
- Assist in website and SEO maintenance
- Researching and connecting with potential new Members
Knowledge Exchange
- Help to create and schedule social media posts related to mental health, addictions, and suicidality
- Doing research and writing articles for our monthly newsletter and blog
- Aiding in the creation of our monthly blog posts
- Writing and recording podcast episodes for our podcast, “DCO Discourse…”
Spirit of Volunteerism
- Developing training and/or networking content for monthly volunteer webinars
- Aiding the Spirit of Volunteerism Committee in gathering data on how to support staff and volunteers in an ever-evolving work environment (in-office/remote/hybrid)
- Helping to re-brand our Spirit of Volunteerism Awards ceremony into a recognition program that is accessible to all work modalities.
Learning Forum
- Assisting in developing training materials and case studies for the LF website
- Assisting with filming and recording of content
- Assisting in uploading materials to the website
- Monitoring feedback

Placement Guidelines
At DCO, we aim to be understanding of your role as a student and do our best to accommodate your already busy schedule. Being a virtual organization means that we can offer some flexibility with what hours you choose to work, however the following is an overview of the expectations we have for our placements.
1) Meet deadlines
2) Communicate often and clearly
3) Attend weekly check-in meetings
4) Show initiative
5) Never post/share/upload/change materials that have not been approved
6) Complete a mid-semester evaluation
If you are still interested in completing a placement with DCO, please send an email including your course information and resume to info@dcontario.org and we will set up a time to meet with you. If we agree to take you on as a student intern, we will provide you with an orientation packet, policies and procedures, and schedule a follow-up orientation meeting.
